Chemistry for Homeschool High Schools

We are excited to let you know of the recent review of Conceptual Chemistry by Blair Lee of Secular, Eclectic, Academics (SEA) Homeschoolers.

We have four flavors of chemistry courses, each using the Conceptual Chemistry textbook and each presented by its author, John Suchocki. Scroll downward to select the one that best suits your needs and interests. We are not allowed to sell our textbooks directly, which is why you’ll need to purchase the textbook separately either from our publisher, Pearson, or any major online bookstore, such as Amazon. Please consider the more affordable eTextbook. Just Google any of our textbook titles and you’ll find they are widely available.

Special Announcements: Please note that all of our awesome and meaningful at-home chemistry lab activities have been embedded into our chemistry courses. There’s no need to purchase a separate lab manual. However, for an even deeper lab experience eScience Labs  offers chemistry lab kits customized to match each of our chemistry courses. Also each of our chemistry courses align with our new and engaging Conceptual Chemistry podcast series now available through Apple and other podcast venues. Show notes at ConceptualScience.com/Podcasts.

Homeschool Planet automated planners for these chemistry courses are currently being developed with a release during the third week of August. The Contextual Chemistry course planner has just been released. The remaining three soon thereafter. Thank you for your patience!

This course leads the student through the entire Conceptual Chemistry curriculum. Each module focuses on a series of related concepts. These modules build upon each other to create a unit, which has a particular theme, such as the stickiness of molecules. All the units, in turn, combine to give the student a solid foundation in the basic concepts of chemistry and the ability to view nature from the perspective of atoms and molecules. Recommended for motivated students seeking a broad understanding of the concepts of chemistry. Works well as a preparation for college general chemistry, but only when the student also has strong math skills. To learn more about this course, please review its teacher’s manual:

Conceptual Chemistry Honors Teacher’s Manual

6 Units; 35 Modules

Unit B: Atomic Particles
Unit C: Atoms and Molecules
Unit D: Chemical Reactions
Unit E: The Chemistry of Life
Unit F: Environmental Chemistry

This self-study course is designed for students who have an interest in pursuing a career in one of the life sciences or fields of allied health. With the understanding that biology is founded upon the principles of chemistry, this sequence focuses on the concepts of chemistry essential to understanding any living system. Although less comprehensive than our honors level chemistry course, this life science chemistry course still holds sufficient weight to qualify for a full 1.0 high school science credit. To learn more about this course, please review its teacher’s manual:

Chemistry Life Science Teacher’s Manual

7 Units: 30 Modules

Unit A: Elements of Chemistry
Unit B: Atomic Bonding
Unit C: Chemistry of Solutions
Unit D: Chemical Reactions
Unit E: Acids, Bases, and Redox
Unit F: Organic and Biochemistry
Unit G: Food and Drugs

3. Conceptual Chemistry, Contextual (Grades 9+)
(Price: $115)

A “sideways” approach to Conceptual Chemistry in which the social and environmental applications of chemistry take center stage along side the development of chemistry concepts. Although there is a greater emphasis on the topics of chemistry, this curriculum still provides for a solid foundation by embracing Conceptual Chemistry’s carefully crafted spiral approach whereby key concepts are revisited throughout the textbook—each time in a different light and with greater depth. The author himself teaches his college courses using this approach. It’s challenging, but fun! Recommended for students who are not likely to pursue a career in science or technology. Although less comprehensive than our honors chemistry course, this environmental chemistry course still holds sufficient weight to qualify for a full 1.0 high school science credit. To learn more about this course, please review its teacher’s manual:

Contextual Chemistry Teacher’s Manual

4 Units; 26 Modules

Unit A: Chemistry in the Environment
Unit B: Energy Resources
Unit C: The Chemistry of Water
Unit D: The Chemistry of Life

This self-study course is designed for students who have an interest in pursuing further studies in any of the physical sciences at the college level and beyond. While this may also be accomplished by enrolling the full version of Conceptual Chemistry, this course omits many of the topics of chemistry, such as agriculture, so that the student has more time to focus on challenging concepts, such as atomic orbitals and stoichiometry. To make for a solid foundation, fewer topics are given in each class to allow for more in-depth study, which should include more end-of-chapter exercises and problems. This course works well as a preparation for college general chemistry, but only when the student also has strong math skills. Although less comprehensive than our honors chemistry course, this prep chemistry course still holds sufficient weight to qualify for a full 1.0 high school science credit. To learn more about this course, please review its teacher’s manual:

College Prep Chem Teacher’s Manual

7 Units; 31 Modules

Unit A: Particles of Matter
Unit B: Elements of Chemistry
Unit C: Atomic Bonding
Unit D: Chemistry of Solutions
Unit E: Chemical Reactions
Unit F: Acids, Bases, and Redox
Unit G: Organic and Biochemistry
